Stardate 1.44.789 whatever. We're not in Kansas

Yesterday, the Bay Area woke up feeling like we were living on another planet. (Today is less orange, but still not "right.")

The wildfires in Washington Oregon and California are almost apocalyptic this year.

Several fires in CA were started by a freak lightening storm last week. One in CA was started as a result of a gender-reveal party* and has burned 8,600 acres so far. One in OR started in the town where my son lives, Ashland. Luckily for his family, the winds blew it north. Unluckily for my friend's family, it burned the entire town of Talent and caused Medford (pop. 82,000) to be evacuated. My friend who just bought a 40 acre farm in Gold Hill is waiting to see if she has to evacuate.

*A gender-reveal party is an event to "reveal" the gender of an not yet born baby to the parents' family and friends. Twentieth century medical advancement allows for early, reliable prenatal sex discernment for people who feel that the binary determination pre-birth is somehow important. Gender reveal parties originated and are most popular within the US but have subsequently spread to other (primarily First World) countries.
